Mike Monday Interview
* If you weren’t a DJ and producer what do you think you would be doing now?
Something in music. I started playing the piano at 7 and since then music's always been my life. I studied music at university and when I left wanted to play the sax for a living. But if I went deaf and couldn't do music anymore, I'd probably try and do something with food (other than eating it), as I love to cook.
* You have a new album, ‘Songs Without Words’ is due out on Om Records – albums are huge projects, what was your starting point and inspiration for the release?
I guess the starting point for "Songs Without Words" was where I left off with my debut album "Smorgasbord" from a couple of years ago. I wanted to explore instrumental music rather than using vocals with lyrics I wanted to see if it was possible to write an instrumental album which is as interesting as one which relies on vocals.
I had to change the way I worked, for example, I've used live instruments including the saxophone and bassoon on some of the tracks. I've also recorded various bits of me umming, aahing, clapping, laughing and the like on my wicked new M Audio tube mic - I even roped my wife into doing some of it!
* Do you have a favourite memory from your early years of Djing?
One that sticks in my mind was my first trip to Kazakhstan, before Borat made the place infamous, when I played a huge Halloween party in a massive underground supermarket car park. It was proper mental. And there wasn't a Borat in sight!
* You are playing for the ‘Om Friends & Family’ event on Saturday 24th May – tell us a little of what we can expect to hear in your set?
Well you'll definitely be hearing a lot of my new material, some of it from the album as well as some other club tracks I've been working on, and I can't wait to play it on that sweet Funktion One system at Corsica.
* After playing in many of the world’s best venues are you looking forward to playing in a more intimate warehouse space?
Absolutely. I've played there a couple of times before and it is a great space with a unique and amazing atmosphere plus playing in the middle of a dream line up is going to be a blast!
* Om Records provide music for both the club and more chilled moments – how do you like to chillout?
I tend to cook, my fondness for curry is also well known. My cats are called Tikka & Masala!
* And finally, what are your plans for the long, hot summer ahead – here’s hoping, of course!
I'm playing a couple of festivals, including Glade, plus I have a mini tour in the USA in July which I'm really looking forward to! Then there'll be the global album tour later in the year which will be punishing so I guess I won't be seeing so much of the beautiful English summer we're all hoping for!
