Description

Minus Presents...

Here's the one we've all been waiting for. Richie Hawtin at The Warehouse Project. In the year where his Minus imprint celebrates ten years of music, Richie will return to Manchester for the first time in over six years. Appearing alongside him will be some of the key artists that have helped to establish Minus as one of the important modern techno labels around. On a night that will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the entire Warehouse Project programme, we are delighted to welcome Richie and his Minus stable to Manchester.

Richie Hawtin

Born in England to Canadian parents, Richie Hawtin grew up in Windsor, just north of Detroit. Inspired by the cities past musical visionaries like Derrick May and Juan Atkins, Hawtin began to play and produce music. Soon enough he was being invited to play in some of the cities clubs and it was at such a gig that he would meet John Acquaviva and go on to create Plus 8 recordings, the forbearer to Minus. Along with fellow luminaries like Carl Craig and Jeff Mills, Hawtin was said to epitomise the second wave of Detroit techno artists. As obsessed with computers, machinery and ambient sounds as he was with techno, Hawtin was creating a minimal techno sound that remained fresh, powerful and most importantly, danceable. Having now DJ'd , produced and performed live for over 15 years Richie is held in high regard by his fellow DJ's and artists. He has remained dedicated to his craft, often pushing and developing his equipment in order to provide himself and his fellow musicians, the best possible platform from which to create and perform music. Over 15 year since first releasing the monster that is "Spastik", Richie Hawtin continues to push forward a movement that touches all four corners of the globe.

Minus

Out of the success and stress of Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva's Plus 8 label, Minus was born. Hawtin wanted to minimize everything that Plus 8 had become. Using the lessons he had learnt through his work for Plus 8 and his experiences as Plastikman, Hawtin wanted to get back to basics, readdress his artistic priorities and create a fresh identity. Seeking to make the most of the inextricable links between music, art and technology, Hawtin aimed to build a base from which he, and the artists and friends that inspired him, could forge ahead with a new creative direction. From the ideals of this ethos, Hawtin has helped to create a close knit collective of artists that is home to the likes of Magda, Troy Pierce, Heartthrob, Barem, Marc Houle and Matthew Dear. The label pushes a varied mix of minimal techno and electronica, always exploring, experimenting and embracing new technology in order to push forward the sonic boundaries of minimalism.
