Description

Live at The Warehouse Project

Dizzee Rascal [ Live ]

It all kicked off in 2003 for Dizzee Rascal. The boy from Bow took his beats out of the bedroom, got himself a record deal and scooped the Mercury Music prize. His prize winning album "Boy in da Corner" spawned "I Luv U" and the huge "Fix Up, Look Sharp" as Dizzee's machine gun mouth and fresh take on hip-hop, grime, ragga and dancehall drew plaudits from both the media and the street. "Showtime" and "Maths and English" proved that Dizzee's first long player was no fluke and the creation of his Dirtee Stank label looks to further showcase the creative sound of urban youth in Britain. His first single to be released on Dirtee Stank, the "Dance Wiv Me" collaboration with Calvin Harris and Chrome, went straight to number 1 on pre-sale downloads alone. The cross-genre style of the track looks to have whetted Dizzee's appetite as he has reportedly told NME of his plans for further collaborations with The Ting-Tings, Franz Ferinand, and once again, The Arctic Monkeys. Dizzee brings a full live show to Manchester and with a new album about to drop in late 2008, he looks certain to showcase new material alongside his earlier work.

Plastic Little [ Live ]

Philadelphia based crew Plastic Little take a break from their tour supporting our headline man Dizzie Rascal, for a full live show live. Formed in 2001 these guys are fast becoming one the most talked about hip hop crews around and have been winning the plaudits for their performances on last Dizzies UK tour. Their studio work is pretty hot too, with last album “She’s Mature” featuring collaborations with Spank Rock, Diplo and Ghostface Killah. Their diverse sound means they have a real mixed bag of fans with their gigs attended by die hard hip – hop heads through to nu – rave electro kids. Part satire, part comedy, always controversial and 100% brilliant live, these lot are a hip – hop crew with a difference.

Riz MC [ Live ]

Ladies and gentlemen, introducing Riz MC. Described by The Guardian as a "potential voice of a generation", Riz first appeared on our radar with his awesome beats and satire piece "Post 9 /11 Blues". It earned him a ban on some of the UK's biggest radio stations but the message was already out: here was an English MC whose lyrics and message were every bit as impacting as the beats to which he rapped to. After show stealing performances at Glastonbury 2007 and the BBC Electric Proms, Riz was asked by curators Massive Attack to open this years Meltdown Festival. He did so with typical aplomb, supporting boyhood heroes Massive Attack and gaining even more fans and plaudits in the process. If that's not enough, the boy can act. Check out his appearance in Channel 4's "Brtis" for starters. If there's a bigger talent in the UK right now, we don't know about it. Oh, and have a look at his Myspace...even that's top quality.

Gilles Peterson

A man who is always searching for the perfect beat and another DJ that pulls it out of the bag for his performances at The Warehouse Project. Through his labels Acid Jazz, Talkin' Loud and Brownswood Recordings, Gilles has helped support the growth of key artists like Erykah Badu, Nuyorican Soul and 4Hero. With his roots in jazz and soul music, Gilles has always played a big part in ensuring the genres are heard by a wider audience through his shows for Kiss, Jazz FM and most famously, Radio 1. His long running show on Radio 1 remains one of the most popular alternative music shows around and effectively "joins the dots" between the music that Gilles loves. Covering hip-hop, dub, reggae, soul, house, funk, d n b, latin, r n b, broken beat and anything else he likes the sound of, the show is widely regarded as a barometer of all that is great and good amongst the genres it covers. Welcome back Gilles.

Daddy G [ DJ set ]

Daddy G is one of the main creative forces behind Massive Attack, one of the most iconic UK bands of our generation. He, along with the other members of Massive Attack, made the records that became the torch bearer for the hugely influential “Bristol sound”. Debut album “Blue Lines” spawned the epic single “Unfinished Sympathy” whilst second album “Protection” proved equally as popular with both critics and fans. As the group began to move away from the trip – hop sound of their early work, 3D and Daddy G took a darker, dubbier and more experimental route with the band as more of their individual influences began to shine through. On Daddy G’s mix for DJ Kicks Massive Attack records are included next to classic cuts from Aretha Franklin, Foxy Brown and Leftfield and it’s this type of juxtaposition of sounds that we can expect from a Daddy G DJ set at this event.
